What is a SIP? How does it work?

What is a Systematic Investment Plan?
A Systematic Investment Plan or SIP is a smart and hassle free mode for investing money in mutual funds. SIP allows you to invest a certain pre-determined amount at a regular interval (weekly, monthly, quarterly, etc.). A SIP is a planned approach towards investments and helps you inculcate the habit of saving and building wealth for the future.

How does it work?

A SIP is a flexible and easy investment plan. Your money is auto-debited from your bank account and invested into a specific mutual fund scheme. You are allocated certain number of units based on the ongoing market rate (called NAV or net asset value) for the day. Every time you invest money, additional units of the scheme are purchased at the market rate and added to your account. Hence, units are bought at different rates and investors benefit from Rupee-Cost Averaging and the Power of Compounding.

Rupee-Cost Averaging With volatile markets, most investors remain skeptical about the best time to invest and try to 'time' their entry into the market. Rupee-cost averaging allows you to opt out of the guessing game. Since you are a regular investor, your money fetches more units when the price is low and lesser when the price is high. During volatile period, it may allow you to achieve a lower average cost per unit.

Power of Compounding Albert Einstein once said, "Compound interest is the eighth wonder of the world. He who understands it, earns it... he who doesn't... pays it." The rule for compounding is simple - the sooner you start investing, the more time your money has to grow. Example If you started investing Rs. 10000 a month on your 40th birthday, in 20 years time you would have put aside Rs. 24 lakhs. If that investment grew by an average of 7% a year, it would be worth Rs. 52.4 lakhs when you reach 60. However, if you started investing 10 years earlier, your Rs. 10000 each month would add up to Rs. 36 lakh over 30 years. Assuming the same average annual growth of 7%, you would have Rs. 1.22 Cr on your 60th birthday - more than double the amount you would have received if you had started ten years later!
Other Benefits of Systematic Investment Plans

Disciplined Saving - Discipline is the key to successful investments. When you invest through SIP, you commit yourself to save regularly. Every investment is a step towards attaining your financial objectives. ·
Flexibility - While it is advisable to continue SIP investments with a long-term perspective, there is no compulsion. Investors can discontinue the plan at any time. One can also increase/ decrease the amount being invested. ·

Long-Term Gains - Due to rupee-cost averaging and the power of compounding SIPs have the potential to deliver attractive returns over a long investment horizon. ·
Convenience - SIP is a hassle-free mode of investment. You can issue a standing instruction to your bank to facilitate auto-debits from your bank account. SIPs have proved to be an ideal mode of investment for retail investors who do not have the resources to pursue active investments.

Invested in mutual funds? You must know how the industry fared@@@@@@####

The past year has been excellent for the mutual funds industry, with equity folios regaining the 40 million mark and assets under management (AUM) touching a record Rs 13 lakh crore or Rs 13 trillion in July.

The month also saw the highest absolute gain in over four years.

Thus the mood at the Business Standard Fund Cafe on Wednesday was optimistic.

A panel of chief executives of seven leading fund houses expressed confidence that AUM would cross Rs 20 lakh crore or Rs 20 trillion in three years.

This is partly because retail investors are indeed coming back after almost three years of negative flows.

Last year, mutual funds saw almost 1.5 million new investor folios and creation of eight million systematic investment plan (SIP) folios, largely because of the increasing flow from smaller cities and towns.

The potential is huge, as the industry has 10-15 million actual investors and that's barely 25-30 per cent of potential judged by the number of those filing income tax returns.

Still, mutual fund houses do have several challenges ahead to win more investors.

For example, according to data available with the Securities and Exchange Board of India, this is one of the four jurisdictions with the most upfront commission charged to investors.

The regulator has also been critical of how asset management companies use funds meant to raise investor awareness.

While such behaviour is not universal, fund houses would do well to introspect on how to remove the widespread perception that the voice of the consumer is not being heard.

It is also important for fund houses to manage return expectations in times of euphoria by engaging with investors to showcase their track record; and to increase their risk management capabilities by taking advantage of a hedging mechanism now permitted by Sebi.

Also, a McKinsey study in June this year has shown distribution of assets is still unequal among various Indian cities.

The share of the so-called B-15 cities (those below the top 15), has been stagnant, at 14 to 16 per cent of the industry's total AUM.

Even within the top 15 cities, the top five fund houses alone account for 72 per cent of the total AUM.

Despite the impressive growth, there is also a growing feeling, as pointed out by a Confederation of Indian Industry-PricewaterhouseCoopers study that the industry has shaped itself into a mutual funds business rather than an asset management business as defined by global peers.

There are opportunities to offer products that address multiple investment needs, to bring in additional investors.

An investor then could choose products that meets her needs at every stage in life.

On its part, the government should look at removing unnecessary roadblocks.

For example, if someone can open a bank account with just an Aadhar card, what is the rationale for insisting that she has to provide a permanent account number and other know-your-customer documentation before investing in mutual funds?

Whatsapp introduces new 'double blue tick' feature

Mobile messaging service WhatsApp has reportedly come up with a new " double blue tick" feature that allows users to know when their texts have been delivered and read.

The blue tick appears as soon as the person at the receiving end has read the message.

According to Daily Express, one grey tick means a message has been successfully sent, two grey ticks show it has been delivered and a blue tick means the message has been read.

The app now also shows the exact time a text was sent. Users need to press and hold down on a particular post to know the accurate time the message was sent to them.

The changes will affect all versions of the app used on the Apple iPhone's iOS, the Android operating system, as well as Windows phones, Nokias and Blackberrys, the report said.

Facebook launches fundraising campaign to fight Ebola

Washington : Facebook has launched a fundraising campaign to help groups fighting Ebola.

The social networking site's founder Mark Zuckerberg has also announced a personal 25 million dollars donation to help battle the deadly disease, CNN reported.

Zuckerberg's donation went to the Centers for Disease Control Foundation. But Facebook is seeking donations for three other groups: the International Medical Corps, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and Save the Children and the site's 1.3 billion users will see a message at the top of their news feed with an option to donate to those groups.

The company will also team with UNICEF to provide information through Facebook to people in targeted regions about Ebola symptoms and treatment, in addition to teaming up with NetHope to provide communications services to medical and aid workers in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone.

The company's official statement said that if the Ebola epidemic isn't addressed, it could become a long-term global health crisis and the site together with their partners hope to offer people the tools they need to fight the disease.

WTO talks set for revival as India nears deal with US, EU

NEW DELHI: After being in deep freeze for over three months, a global trade deal is finally in sight with the US and the European Union showing signs of accepting India's demand for providing flexibility to developing countries in fixing minimum support price for farm products. In return, India will sign the stalled international treaty on easier customs rules once an agreement on the contentious food security issue is reached at the World Trade Organization (WTO).

"India, US and EU are close to some understanding and based on this understanding they will work for a final solution at the WTO," said a source, who did not wish to be identified. Senior commerce department officials are engaged in consultations in Geneva. There are indications that the developed countries will agree not to challenge any breach in food subsidy caps till the calculation formula is reworked.

Global trade talks have been deadlocked after India refused to agree to a trade facilitation agreement to usher in easier rules for goods to flow through ports and airports without its concerns on food security being addressed. Based on current rules, several developing countries are close to breaching the cap on 10% value of production and face the threat of punitive action at WTO. India has argued that the calculation is flawed as it is based on outdated prices and has demanded that formula be reworked.

At the Bali ministerial meeting last December, WTO members had agreed to address India's concerns over a four year period, during which no disputes would be raised at the multilateral body even if the subsidy cap was breached. At the Indonesian island the ministers had also agreed to sign the agreement on customs rules by July 31. The developed world had argued that the rules would provide a $1 trillion boost to a sluggish global economy and pave the way for reviving the 13-year-old Doha dialogue.

Despite being blamed for "blocking" a global trade deal, India has stuck to its stand. But in recent weeks, officials have indicated that India is willing to settle for a clause that extends the four year "peace clause" to perpetuity — something that is learnt to have been discussed during a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Barack Obama.

The reports of a settlement at WTO come two days after Modi met ministers and top commerce department officials on Monday. On Monday, sources had then described it as a "review meeting" and had suggested that no firm offers were on the table.

Sources said finance minister Arun Jaitely had taken up the issue and argued India's stand with US secretary of state John Kerry, when he had visited New Delhi in late July. After hearing the government's argument, Kerry had no answers and described it as "reasonable". There was, however, immense pressure on the Obama administration from domestic lobbies in the US. This was evident when a US official, who was part of Kerry's delegation, tried to resile from his position.

Washington had indicated its "appreciation" for New Delhi's posture during last month's meeting between a top USTR official and commerce & industry minister Nirmala Sitharaman. Similarly, UK chancellor George Osborne had shown support for India's stand, the source said.

PM Narendra Modi to Visit Varanasi Today, Likely to Adopt a Village

VARANASI:  Prime Minister Narendra Modi will on Friday visit his Lok Sabha constituency of Varanasi for the first time since he took charge in May. He is expected to adopt a village under the MP Model Village Scheme.

Jayapur village, 24 kilometres away from the ancient temple town of Varanasi, hopes to be picked and is prepping to receive Mr Modi, who is scheduled to make a public address there.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav of the Samajwadi Party will be in Varanasi to welcome the Prime Minister.

Tight security arrangements have been made. PM Modi will be in his constituency for a little over 24 hours.Among the oldest cities in the world, Varanasi has been constantly in the spotlight ever since PM Modi chose to retain this Uttar Pradesh constituency and gave up the other seat he had won in the national elections - Vadodara in his home state of Gujarat.

Residents in the town hope its new VIP profile will ensure that its crumbling infrastructure and lack of basic amenities will be addressed.

Soon after the Bharatiya Janata Party won the Lok Sabha elections in May, Mr Modi had made a thanksgiving visit to the city; he had offered prayers at the famous Kashi Vishwanath temple and had taken part in the Ganga Aarti.

Tomorrow, he is also expected to inaugurate several projects including one to uplift the lot of weavers in Varanasi.

5 Talented Celebrities Who Ruined Their Careers

1. Whitney Houston

Beautiful actress and talented singer Whitney Houston married nearly retired R&B star Bobby Brown in 1992, at the height of her career. With her drug dependency problems, it may not have been a good move being together with someone with substance abuse issues of his own. Through their tumultuous marriage, Whitney Houston’s drug abuse only became worse. Brown and Huston divorced in 2007, Huston was about to record a new album and her life seemed to be going well. Two years later she appeared on Oprah Winfrey’s show and gave an interview that was recognized as one of the most expected and outspoken. Huston admitted that her drug addiction became all-absorbing after the thundering success of The Bodyguard in 1992.

Her world tour of 2010, entitled the Nothing but Love World Tour, didn’t salvage her career, though. Her fans were disappointed at the performance and the quality of her voice and she received numerous negative responses from critics. While she did go through rehab, she never overcame her habit entirely. In 2012, under the simultaneous influence of cocaine, marijuana and other drugs, she drowned in her bathtub. Anyway, Whitney Huston is one of the world’s best-selling singers with more than 200 million records sold over the years.

2. Michael Jackson

Michael Jackson was the biggest name in popular music worldwide for years. For whatever reason, though, the star adopted a stranger and stranger lifestyle over time. With multiple cosmetic surgeries, a love of spending time with children, prescription drug abuse, and an out-of-control shopping habit, the star’s life gradually came apart. He was married two times and both his marriages were unhappy and short-lived.

In 2003 his reputation and name was tarnished, after the releasing of a documentary film Living with Michael Jackson. The film revealed the most scandalous details of his life including sleeping arrangements with a young boy. After the criminal investigation Jackson was arrested. During numerous court cases Jackson lost his fortune and was unable to cover even the most basic charges. The star burned through most of his money and his goodwill with his fans by the time he passed away in 2009.

3. Britney Spears

Britney Spears is one of those rare talented people who are able to start out as a child star and then make the transformation to stardom as an adult. Britney started her career at the age of 11, when she was picked for The New Mickey Mouse Club with other would be stars such as Justin Timberlake and Christina Aguilera. After the show she focused on her solo career and released the first single in 1998. After becoming a worldwide sensation in pop music, she somehow let her life unwind.

In 2004 her reputation and name was ruined due to an odd 2-day marriage with Jason Alexander and the following scandalous love affair with backup dancer. Later that year she married him and gave birth to their first son. But their marriage didn’t last long and after the birth of their second son, they began divorce proceedings. Britney was acknowledged to be mentally ill and her ex-husband received full custody over their children. Over several instances, she was photographed by paparazzi drunk in public. Britney didn’t let her career completely crumble, though. She caught herself in time. Today, she has made an excellent comeback.

Sachin Tendulkar Book Release: Top 10 Excerpts From 'Playing It My Way'

Sachin Tendulkar officially released his autobiography 'Playing It My Way' in Mumbai on Wednesday. The book grabbed headlines even before the launch with Tendulkar attacking former India coach Greg Chappell, calling him a "ringmaster."
Tendulkar has made some startling revelations in the book and has used uncharacteristically strong words. (Tendulkar's Career Would Have Been Incomplete Without World Cup: Akram)
Here are the top 10 quotes from Playing It My Way that are sure to stay in public memory for a long time:
1)"No one from the BCCI managed to call me or inform me of my removal as captain before someone from the media called to say I was no longer captain. I felt extremely humiliated to hear this."
2.)"I told myself that the BCCI mandarins might be able to take the captaincy away from me, but no one could do the same as far as my own cricket was concerned."
3)"I want to state very clearly that the (Monkey Gate) incident arose because Andrew Symonds had been continually trying to provoke Bhajji (Harbhajan Singh) and it was inevitable that the two would have an altercation at some point."
4)"I still believe that the (Monkey Gate) matter would not have been blown so out of proportion if (Ricky) Ponting had discussed it with the captain Anil Kumble, Harbhajan and the Indian team management before reporting the incident to Mike Procter, the match referee."
5)"Kapil Dev's method (as India coach) of involvement and his thought process was limited to leaving the running of the team to the captain, and hence he did not involve himself in strategic discussions that would help us on the field."
6)"Just months before the World Cup, (then India coach) Greg Chappell had come to see me at home and, to my dismay, suggested that I should take over the captaincy from Rahul Dravid."
7)"I hated losing and as captain of the team I felt responsible for the string of miserable performances. More worryingly, I did not know how I could turn it around, as I was already trying my absolute best."
8)"It (losing) was hurting me badly and it took me a long time to come to terms with these failures. I even contemplated moving away from the sport completely, as it seemed nothing was going my way."
9)"Mind you, there is little doubt in my mind that we would have drawn (Sydney Test of 2008) had it not been for what seemed to us to be mistakes by the umpires and some rather unsportsmanlike conduct by a few of the Australian players."
10)The best of the best: Ian Chappell in 2007, had written in a column that Tendulkar should look at the mirror and ask himself if he was good enough to continue playing cricket. Tendulkar responds: "I showed him the size of the mirror in 2008 when we toured Australia (Sachin was man of the series in the VB Series) He should have realised that the man he is asking to stand infront of the mirrior has played more cricket than him"

Bengaluru: India's Bangalore city changes name

Bengaluru is the city's name in local Kannada language and local politicians and historians say Bangalore is an anglicism that should be dropped.

The names of 11 other cities in Karnataka state, of which Bangalore is the capital, will also be changed.

Home to hundreds of IT firms, the city is known as India's Silicon Valley.

Over the last few years, the name Bengaluru has grown in popularity as it has been extensively used to describe the city, but it was formally approved by India's federal government earlier this month.

The official name change has led to a debate with some saying the move may have an impact on the city's global reputation, BBC Hindi's Imran Qureshi says.

Those in favour of Bengaluru say people will soon get used to it, he adds.

India bans first-class air travel for officials

The moves are aimed at achieving a fiscal deficit target of 4.1% of the gross domestic product for this year.

India's economy has slowed in recent years, growing by 4.7% in 2013-14.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's BJP swept to power in the recent election on the promise of reviving the economy.

The previous Congress-led government had initiated similar measures in 2012 and 2013 to trim the deficit.

The latest austerity measures "are intended at promoting fiscal discipline, without restricting the operational efficiency of the government", a finance ministry statement quoted by the Press Trust of India news agency said.

"In the context of the current fiscal situation, there is a need to continue to rationalise expenditure and optimise available resources," it added.

New jobs have been frozen and purchases of cars have been mostly banned, reports said. Officials have been asked to use video conferencing for meetings wherever possible.

"While officers are entitled to various classes of air travel depending on seniority, utmost economy would need to be observed while exercising the choice keeping the limitations of budget in mind. However, there would be no bookings in the first class," the finance ministry said.

The government aims to further cut fiscal deficit to 3.6% in 2015-16 and 3% in 2016-17.

Mr Modi won a landslide in the May general election with a pledge to boost growth and create jobs for one million people who enter India's workforce every month.

Devendra Fadnavis set to be Maharashtra Chief Minister, Nitin Gadkari says ‘happy in Delhi

Two days after what was seen as a show of strength by the Nitin Gadkari camp, the BJP’s central leadership on Thursday cleared the way for state party chief Devendra Fadnavis’s appointment as the next chief minister, giving its nod for the state legislature party meeting on October 27.

Meanwhile, Union Minister Gadkari maintained that he is “very happy in Delhi”. His remarks came after Fadnavis visited him at his residence in Nagpur on Thursday. Speaking to the media later, Gadkari said, “I am very happy in Delhi. I am not interested in returning to Maharashtra… There were some leaders who felt I should become the Chief Minister of Maharashtra, but I have often said that I will continue in Delhi.”

Fadnavis maintained a studied silence on the issue.

On Tuesday, 39 of the BJP’s 44 newly-elected MLAs in Vidarbha took a flight from Mumbai to Nagpur and asked Gadkari to take over as the Chief Minister.

“It appears that Gadkari was trying to show his political might in Vidarbha… The gathering of 39 MLAs was designed to show the central party leadership who is the leader of Maharashtra,” said a senior party leader.

“We have already identified three state BJP leaders who were instrumental in projecting Gadkari’s candidature to sabotage Fadnavis’s election to the top post. Both Amit Shah and Narendra Modi have been given a full report on the events in the state over the last 48 hours,” said a senior BJP central functionary.

“The Gadkari camp’s gameplan not only boomeranged, but also tarnished the image of the party,” said a BJP general secretary, adding that it has not gone down well with the rank and file.

Senior state leaders Sudhir Mungantiwar and Vinod Tawde were among the leaders who had voiced their support for Gadkari. Sources said MLC Anil Sole, who is close to Gadkari, was also keen on promoting his candidature.

However, some sources said that Gadkari had categorically told Modi and Shah that he would like to remain in Delhi. “Gadkari is an important leader, and Modi would certainly like to have him in the union cabinet,” said a party leader.

The party leadership decided to field Fadnavis as its young and dynamic “development face” — the star campaigner who could connect with the people across the rural-urban divide. “His integrity, hard work and sincerity would work to the party’s advantage when it makes a historic beginning in Maharashtra administration,” said a party leader.

When Sheila met Modi: ‘I saw a confident man, with a vision

It is not a description that many in her own party may agree with. But Congress veteran, former Kerala Governor and ex-CM of Delhi, Sheila Dikshit, has revealed that when she met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in July, she “saw a confident man, with a vision” and “a new language”.
That does not mean an endorsement though, because the 76-year-old was quick to add that it remained to be seen how this vision “would be practically implemented”.
Speaking to The Indian Express on a wide range of issues, including the circumstances in which she quit the Governor’s job this year and the prospect of “change” after the Lok Sabha polls, Dikshit said that she is now involved in heading a Congress committee to manage the commemoration of Jawaharlal Nehru’s 125th birth anniversary on November 14.
Speaking about her meeting with Modi before resigning as Kerala Governor, Dikshit said, “I saw a confident man, with a vision when I went to meet him, but a big ‘but’ is how all this would be practically implemented. He started with ‘achhe din aayenge’. Now that has completely dropped from his vocabulary. His coinage of new phrases is attractive as it is different. But how far is it practically achieveable, a very big question mark hangs over that.”
Asked whether the Congress needed to take its cue from Modi’s manner of functioning, she said, “Whether we should draw from his style or methodology is something we need to wait and assess. It is too early to try and do anything like he does. He is speaking and promising so many things and has a new language, but we need to see what will happen eventually on his promises.”
On the controversy surrounding her resignation as Governor of Kerala, Dikshit said that she had made it clear to the NDA government before putting in her papers that it must keep in mind “the dignity of the post”.
She said that after the NDA government took charge, she too – like other governors appointed during the UPA regime – “got a call from the Home Secretary”.
”I told him two things, the first that it was a Constitutional position and secondly, that it was a position of respect, and I asked him not to call me up again. He did not. But I met Rajnath Singh, the Home Minister, after that and told him that he must give me 10-12 days to wind up and that he must not treat us all like he did Kamla Beniwal (the Gujarat governor and then Mizoram governor) or the Puducherry Lt. Governor. I told him that he can’t just dismiss us. Even if they must not regard the dignity of the person, they must worry about the dignity of the post. He did not say anything. I told him we had not applied for this post but had been chosen to serve as governors.

Sonia and Rahul Gandhi on black money list, alleges Subramanian Swamy

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Subramanian Swamy on Monday alleged that Congress president Sonia Gandhi and her son Rahul Gandhi are on the list of people who have stashed black money in safe havens abroad.

"I have written letter to the Finance Ministry and the Commission on black money that Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi have black money stashed abroad. But no action has been taken. At least eight former cabinet ministers of the Congress are on the list," said Swamy while reacting to the government's move revealing the names of three persons in the black money case to the Supreme Court.

The Communist Party of India (CPI), however, slammed the ruling BJP and alleged that it was making false claims to the people about bringing the black money allegedly stashed in foreign bank accounts back to the country. "They said the Congress was protecting the black money holders. The BJP protested against the affidavit that the Congress had filed during their reign. Now, the same affidavit is being submitted by Arun Jaitley," said CPI leader Atul Anjan.

"Initially, they said they will reveal names of 800 people involved with this issue, now they are saying they cannot reveal all the names due to legal obligations and will publish only 136 names. I think isn't it getting delayed because the BJP supporters themselves are involved in it?" he asked. The CPI leader further said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who highlighted the black money issue during his campaigns before the Lok Sabha elections, should now get to the truth.

Meanwhile, Congress leader Rashid Alvi said that the people have every right to know about the status of the money stashed in foreign bank accounts. "We are waiting. The entire country is waiting. The government should reveal all the 800 names that are with them to people. The country must know that who are the backstabbers of the country," said Alvi. The ruling BJP had raised the issue of black money during the campaigning for the 2014 Lok Sabha elections and repeatedly questioned the stand of the former Congress-led UPA regime.

The NDA government is putting pressure particularly on Switzerland, seeking details of Indians who have parked unaccounted money in the Alpine country's highly secretive banks. It has quickly implemented a Supreme Court directive to set up a high-powered special investigation team, headed by retired judge MB Shah, to look into the issue.

While there are no official estimates, Global Financial Integrity (GFI), a Washington-based think-tank, has estimated that Indians had parked USD 462 billion in overseas tax havens between 1948 and 2008. Earlier, the government had told the apex court that it could not disclose the names of those who have deposited money in banks abroad as it would jeopardise tax agreements with nations providing those names to India.

There were murmurs of protest within the ruling BJP that not disclosing names would hurt the party's image after it had made bringing back black money, a key issue in the general elections that it won by a landslide. The Centre's stand also drew a strong response from the Congress, which accused it of hypocrisy. In response, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley had recently said the disclosing of names of people holding black money accounts will embarrass the opposition party.
